High blood pressure: The SILENT killer

Hypertension or high blood pressure is a referred to as the ‘silent killer’ in the medical community because it does not present with symptoms.  Chances are that if you have high blood pressure, you would never know it unless your doctor takes your routine blood pressure at the clinic.  So why is it referred to as the ‘silent killer’?  High blood pressure, like diabetes, affects many organ systems, especially the heart.

On March 14th, 2009 a group of Ottawa Muslim Afghan Youth organized an event with Dr. Farid Younos, as the special guest. This was the first time such an event was organized for the Afghan community in Ottawa. The event commenced at 5:00pm and ended at 9:00pm.  It took place in the auditorium of the Ottawa Carleton District School Board.

The other day, I received a call from my Modar jan telling me about a meeting she had had with one of her beloved friends.  In the duration of our conversation, she tells me, “She has ‘shakar’ and the doctor told her that it is 8.7.  Is this a bad thing?”  That number, 8.7 is a percentage that represents glycosylated hemoglobin A1c levels in the blood.
